Running a Website

Hi there,

It’s a daunting world setting up a website, especially when you are not so tech savvy. The purpose of my website is to Promote and Sell my goods. It was important to me that the site represented who Vicki Evans is.

I spent some time using an amazing site called killersites where I was able to learn Photoshop and Dreamweaver. I even managed to make up a Simple shopping cart, but at the end of the day that’s all it was.

I researched alot of Shopping Cart software programs, Magento, Create too name but a few. Then I found Opencart, a Open Source Shopping Cart. Such a fantastic product available to all and best of all it’s free. Ok, so it’s not completely free, you can purchase Themes and Modifications but you may be more technologically minded than me and be able to modify things yourself.

I have had my site up and running for a year now, admittedly I have only had 15 sales of which 6 where from my Family, but I feel I’m getting there. It’s been a great learning curve, spending lots of time working out how to improve things. For instance SEO (Search Engine Optimisation), working out the best keywords, improving my meta descriptions, linking to Google Products, and the general site design which I have to thank Themeburn for.

So this is basically a bit of a promotion for Opencart, but it has served me well. Its simple to install and set up. There is a great demo available on the Opencart page that shows you how it works behind the scenes.

I have researched many other Jewellery and Craft websites, some of which are fantastic yet some I find a little drab with poor design. So if you are looking into setting up an online shop I would recommend Opencart. I’m generally around on Facebook so If you need any advice or unsure of how to do things, I will gladly advise you.
